There are over 800 species of June Bugs in the family Phyllophaga (which means "leaf eat"). This one is called Crinita, or "bearded", and is one of the most commonly found varieties.
The female lays between 50-200 eggs in the soil, where they live for three years and pass through several life stages before they emerge as beetles in late summer. June bugs are high in protein and fat and many animals and birds feast on these "flying croutons". They also make excellent bass bait.
