Coyote Melon (Chichicayote) and its relatives, are native to Sonora, Southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico. The pulp is unpalatable to humans, but the seeds are edible when roasted. Coyotes and other animals are able to consume the entire melon. Javelina can smell out and devour the roots even when there is no plant above ground. Prehistoric peoples used the dried gourds as containers.
They Hybridize easily and can cross pollinate with squash and melons in your garden if nearby. The Lemon Drop Melon was created by crossing the Galia and Coyote Melon to produce a hardy and delicious heat resistant melon.
